We donated £1,500 to a local women’s refuge, a safe haven that is part of the Salvation Army, nestled in the heart of Birmingham. This refuge isn’t just a building; it’s a sanctuary for women and children who have had the courage to leave behind their homes to escape domestic violence. It provides more than shelter; it offers hope and a fresh start.
The refuge operates much like a small community. The women and children residing there support one another, forming bonds akin to family, underpinned by shared experiences and the collective aspiration for a better future. It’s a place where the scars of the past begin to heal, and where small steps are celebrated as significant milestones.
About The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, established in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth, began its mission in the East End of London, targeting the poor, homeless, and destitute. It has since grown into an international movement, renowned for its commitment to providing spiritual and practical assistance to those in need.
Operating in 131 countries, the organisation offers a diverse range of services including homelessness prevention, addiction rehabilitation, elderly care, and disaster relief. The iconic red kettles and bell-ringers during the Christmas season symbolise the Salvation Army’s enduring legacy of charity and community service.
Understanding the refuge’s critical role and acknowledging that such an essential service often operates with limited financial resources, Pure Staff decided to extend a helping hand. Our visit to the refuge was an eye-opening and deeply humbling experience. Meeting the manager and witnessing first-hand the incredible work being done to support these brave souls was inspiring. The cheque was presented not just as a means of financial support but as a gesture of solidarity and acknowledgement of the valuable work the refuge undertakes.
